As a Student Guide at the  Anderson Collection and Cantor Arts Center, not only will you be paid to give interactive tours of the museums to the public and to K-12 audiences, you’ll be an integral member of a team dedicated to public engagement and museum education. Student Guides will develop public speaking and visual literacy skills, facilitate conversations about contemporary issues, and have the opportunity to interact with experts from a wide variety of disciplines.

 

Course Content

Guides will begin by learning about the role of museums in our culture, art historical context [or, more broadly, "the field of art history"], and best practices for engaging visitors. The course will offer tools for building an effective tour experience and working with diverse audiences in museum spaces. Topics to be discussed include exhibition- and object-based learning, visual thinking strategies, artists’ processes, K-12 education, and community engagement.

 

Commitment
Student Guides training requires the time commitment of a class. Meetings are every Monday of fall, winter, and spring quarters from 4-6:30 pm. They will take place at both the Cantor Arts Center and the Anderson Collection. These workshops will include exercises in the museum galleries, field trips, and guest scholars, educators, and curators. Guides are expected to produce one short research paper each quarter.

Weekly attendance is required. Outside the meeting times, Guides are expected to complete reading, research, and writing assignments.

Students are expected to commit to the program for at least two years: one year of training and one year of touring (Guides will not be expected to meet every week once they've completed training).

Guides are paid a stipend of $600 for each quarter of training. Dinner is included during training. Once training is completed, Guides are paid on an hourly basis per tour given (rate is commensurate with the Stanford pay scale for students).

Student Guides is open to any Stanford student who can commit to two years: rising sophomores and juniors, rising seniors planning to co-term, and graduate students.

Students with a diverse range of backgrounds and interests are encouraged to apply. Prior experience with giving tours is not necessary. An art or art history background is also not necessary, though students should have a strong interest in the arts and in both the Cantor Arts Center and the Anderson Collection.

Applications for the 2019-2020 academic year will be due May 8, 2019.

Interviews will be conducted in late May, and all students will be notified of their status at the beginning of June.
