Using Josef Albers’ acclaimed series, Homage to the Square, as a basis for contextual discussion, Loren Schoenberg will place 20th century jazz in the alongside simultaneous innovations in the art world. In this rigorous series, begun in 1949, Albers explored chromatic interactions with nested squares. During the same period, Ellington placed various idioms of jazz (specifically the blues) within similarly constructed musical spheres. Other moments will be discussed as well, including a fascinating moment that pairs Sonny Rollins with Stephen Foster!
