Jean Shinis known for her sprawling and often public sculptures, transforming accumulations of discarded objects into powerful monuments that interrogate our complex relationship between material consumption, collective identity, and community engagement. Her work is included in the Anderson Collection’s current exhibition Convergence Zone. Often working cooperatively within a community, Shin amasses vast collections of everyday objects including the altered Mountain Dew bottles that make up Invasives, her sculpture on view on the facade of the Anderson Collection. Shin is also the 2022-23 Denning Visiting Artist at Stanford, working closely with the LaBeaud Lab in the Stanford School of Medicine to create an art installation with students and faculty that highlights the issues around single use plastic waste.

The artist will be in conversation with Marci Kwon, Assistant Professor of Art History at Stanford University and co-director of the Cantor Arts Center’s Asian American Art Initiative. She is the author of Enchantments: Joseph Cornell and American Modernism (Princeton, 2021), co-editor of the online Martin Wong Catalogue Raisonné.
