Born 100 years ago, Richard Diebenkorn (1922–1993) produced a body of work whose beauty and mysteriously empathy-inspiring nature has long attracted many devotees worldwide. He lived during the period of America’s great surge onto the world stage of visual art, working alongside the likes of Willem de Kooning, Philip Guston, Joan Mitchell, and Wayne Thiebaud. Diebenkorn was a singular and distinguished American painter, draftsman, and printmaker, forging a decisively independent style at multiple points in his career. He explored both abstract and figurative modes of expression in his Abstract Expressionist canvases; his figurative and landscape works (known today as Bay Area Figurative Art); and his monumental, geometrically grounded abstract “Ocean Park” series.

The Anderson Collection at Stanford University is delighted to celebrate the artist’s centennial with an installation of eight works ranging from 1949, when the artist received his degree from Stanford, through 1980. The museum is grateful to the Richard Diebenkorn Foundation and the Anderson Family for their loans of this installation.
