Untitled (1969)

An almost geometrically perfect cube: Powder-blue, sleek and smooth–ten inches tall by ten inches wide by only about eight and a half inches thick. Spray-coated lacquer over fiberglass around an internal plywood frame, the work was made by John McCracken in 1969, and is untitled. Despite their uniformity, each face reflects the light from a different section of the room, causing them to contrast and change as one walks past, like imperfect mirrors. In fact, faint reflected images become visible, focusing on a side just-so.
